Dear SEA Colleagues,

I am writing to let you know that after careful consideration, and for the reasons described below, the SEA Board has elected to move the 2021 Fall meeting on November 4, 2021 to a virtual format.

Many of you will be aware that in 2019 the SEA Fall Meeting was moved from the day preceding the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) Annual Meeting to the day before the Society of Academic Associations of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine (SAAAPM) Annual Meeting. This was a successful strategy with record attendance due to the overlap in membership. Further, our members have indicated that they would prefer to attend other subspecialty meetings occurring on the day before the ASA Meeting. The SEA Board has since voted to continue holding the Fall Meeting prior to the SAAAPM for the foreseeable future.

You have likely seen the notice that the SAAAPM decided to move their 2021 Annual Meeting to a virtual format. They made their decision with data from a membership survey – over half the respondents would attend an in-person meeting and half would not. Of the respondents, 90% of would attend a virtual meeting and the majority of respondents expressed preference for a virtual meeting. The SEA stands in support of the SAAAPM decision to move to a virtual format and will also move the SEA Fall Meeting to a virtual format.

The COVID-19 pandemic has challenged us in our professional and personal lives. It forced us to cancel our 2020 Spring Meeting and prompted a pivot to our first virtual format for the 2020 Fall Meeting. In the face of institutional travel restrictions, concerns about the risk of travel, especially for members with children under 12 years of age who cannot currently be vaccinated, and the optics of having an in-person meeting during the current COVID surge, the SEA Board feels this is the correct decision. We were looking forward to seeing everyone in-person again, but the safety of our members and their need to be on the front lines at their institutions remains a priority.

The Fall Meeting will still be held on Thursday, November 4, but in a virtual format. We are currently working to revise the agenda for the meeting to best serve our members. Incorporating your feedback from the Spring 2021 virtual meeting, we will do our best to ensure the agenda does not go across multiple days nor carry into the late evening when many prefer to spend time with their family and maintain work-life balance.

Be on the lookout for the revised agenda and registration to open soon.

Please be safe and we look forward to “seeing” everyone at the 2021 Fall Meeting in a virtual format.

Sincerely,

Stephanie B. Jones, MD
SEA President
