The SEA Research Mentorship Program (2022 - present)

The SEA Research Committee provides practical advice for planning, executing, and submitting your scholarly works in educational research and curriculum development. Alternatively, we feature a summary of educational theories to broaden your foundation in educational research and curriculum development.

Introduction of the SEA Research Mentorship Program

Needs Assessment:

  • There are many clinician-educators who fail to publish the abstract to a full publication. Only 15% (52 abstracts among 351) SEA presented abstracts between 2011 - 2019 have been published as a full manuscript (Cerza et al. 2022: unpublished data). The mentorship may boost the willingness and the publication rate of the clinician-educators.
  • There are many submissions to the Idea Lab workshop. These submitters have a good idea; however, intervention at the Workshop may be transient. These clinician-educators may be benefitted from the longitudinal support.

Goal:

Support a clinician-educator who needs longitudinal coaching/mentorship on her/his educational research study for publication

Fei Chen, PhD, MEd, MStat, is an assistant professor in the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She also serves as the founding co-director of The Excellence in Anesthesiology at Chapel Hill Education Research (TEACHER) Lab and the Academic Medicine Rotation of the department. Dr. Chen is the current chair of the scholarship committee and a member of the leadership council of the Academy of Educators of UNC School of Medicine. Dr. Chen’s research focuses on assessment and instructional design for enhanced learning in medical education. Working with faculty and scholars within and outside of UNC, Dr. Chen has designed, implemented, and evaluated multiple curriculum and research projects on competency-based assessment, simulation-based education, instructional methods, and resident wellness.

Susan Martinelli, MD

Susie Martinelli, MD, FASA is a Professor of Anesthesiology and the Anesthesiology Residency Program Director at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine in Chapel Hill. Her career has centered on being a clinician-educator with a focus on research in education. One of her research interests is in innovative approaches to graduate medical education, such as the flipped classroom. Additionally, she has developed programs that utilize family and friends to improve the well-being of healthcare providers, including medical students, residents, and attending physicians. She has received grant support from the AAMC, AMA, and the Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research for these efforts. She enjoys collaborating with other institutions in this work. Dr. Martinelli is a member of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education Review Committee for Anesthesiology, the Chair of the Educational Advisory Board for the Association of University Anesthesiologists, and a council member of the Association of Anesthesiology Core Program Directors.

Lara Zisblatt, EdD, MA, PMME

Lara Zisblatt, EdD, MA, PMME is the Education Specialist for the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Michigan Health System.  As the Education Specialist, Dr. Zisblatt is responsible for the oversight of the assessment and evaluation arm of the Education Division, the implementation and growth of the curricular offerings and faculty development as it relates to teaching, and the development of education research and scholarship.  Dr. Zisblatt has her doctorate in medical education and has been working in the field for 20 years.  Before joining the University of Michigan, Dr. Zisblatt was the Associate Director for Continuing Medical Education at Boston University School of Medicine. Her research interests include motivating clinicians improve their practice. Dr. Zisblatt has received ten grants totaling over $8 million in the research and implementation of medical education. She was awarded the Rising Star Award from the Alliance for Continuing Education in the Health Professions in 2013. She is the Associate Editor for the Journal of Education in Perioperative Medicine and an ad hoc reviewer for three national journals in medical education. She received an award as a Top Reviewer for the Journal of Graduate Medical Education in 2018.  She has been invited to speak at national meetings for organizations like the Association of American Medical Colleges, American Medical Association, the Society of Continuing Medical Education and the Society for Academic Associations in Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine. She is currently the Past-President for the Association of Anesthesiology Program Administrators and Educators.

Mentorship Processes:

  • Mentor-mentee matching will be presided over by the administrator (specific mentor requests can be made by the mentee at the time of application)
  • Submit the Mentor-Mentee agreement form
  • The mentee has the primary responsibility to initiate the meetings.
  • The frequency, length, and management of the meetings will be determined by the mentor and the mentee.
  • The acknowledgment of the SEA research mentorship program has to be made on any scholarly products generated by the mentee.
  • If the mentor's contribution fulfills the requirement of the authorship (Defining the role of authors and contributors, International Committee of Medical Journal Editors. https://www.icmje.org/recommendations/browse/roles-and-responsibilities/defining-the-role-of-authors-and-contributors.html), the mentor's participation should be listed as the authorship. This decision should be mutually agreed upon between the mentor and the mentee.
  • If there is any disagreement or conflict arises, the Administrator or the SEA Council will serve as the mediators.
  • This is a one-year term mentor-mentee program. Only if both parties express the wish to renew the mentor-mentee relationship, the mentorship will be renewed.
  • The mentees will undergo both the entry and exit interview with the administrator.
  • The mentees are required to respond to various surveys during peri-mentorship periods.
