Welcome to the Society for Education in Anesthesia (SEA) website! Our Society was founded in 1985 and is dedicated to the advancement of education in anesthesiology. We are a collaborative and inclusive community of anesthesiologists and medical educators who seek “excellence in patient care through education”, and whose mission is to “support, enrich and advance anesthesia education and those who teach”. The SEA is the foremost anesthesiology society offering opportunities for clinical educators to learn about teaching and to grow their careers as academic educators.
Our twice yearly conferences feature up-to-date topics in medical education, recent examples including; “Well-Being: Translating Concepts into Action” - Fall 2018 and “Training Professional, Humanistic Anesthesiologists” - Spring 2018. Our meetings offer a mixture of cutting edge plenary speakers, panel discussions and a wide range of hands-on, activity-oriented workshops. We offer peer coaching for our workshop presenters, this is a unique opportunity for the workshop presenters to receive feedback and mentoring from a trained SEA peer coach with the goals of enhancing their academic growth and presentation skills. Other highlights of our conferences include moderated sessions for educators to present research and curriculum development abstracts, and opportunities for networking and mentoring.
Our flagship Workshop on Teaching is a long-standing, unique opportunity for both junior and senior anesthesia faculty to learn about the application of educational theory to resident and medical student education. Many well-known, successful academic anesthesiology educators began their careers at this workshop and a number return regularly to enhance their knowledge of education and grow their teaching skills.
The SEA offers a number of opportunities and awards aimed at assisting anesthesiology educators as they develop their academic careers. The SEAd award is a $10,000 education research starter grant awarded annually. We offer two Philip Liu awards for “Innovations in Anesthesia Education”, at the Spring meeting every year. One for the best curriculum development abstract and one for the best education research abstract. The annual SEA/Duke Award for “Excellence and Innovation in Anesthesia Education” recognizes individuals with a longstanding commitment to teaching anesthesia and supporting trainees. Each year the SEA partners with Health Volunteers Overseas to award between 8 and 10 senior resident SEA-HVO Traveling Fellowships to support participation in programs for teaching anesthesia in low resource countries. The Journal of Education in Perioperative Medicine (JEPM) is the SEA’s own PubMed indexed journal where anesthesiology educators can publish research and disseminate their ideas.
The work of the SEA is done by our committees, who meet face-to-face during breakfast at the Fall and Spring meetings. We invite SEA conference attendees to join any of these committee discussions over breakfast and get involved. Our committees generate educational tools and resources such as a faculty development portal, evaluation rubrics for the anesthesiology milestones, templates for developing resident OSCEs and resources for educational researchers, residents and medical students. All these resources and many more are available on this website as benefits for our SEA members.
I invite you to explore our website, using some of the links in this message to get started. I hope you will consider attending one of our conferences and joining our community of energetic and enthusiastic educators.
