The inaugural “Philip Liu Awards for Innovations in Anesthesia Education” was awarded at the 2017 Society for Education in Anesthesia (SEA) Spring Meeting in Jacksonville, Florida. The award was established by the gracious benevolence of the Liu family (via the Dr. Philip Liu Fund for Medical Education of the Hawai'i Community Foundation) and the SEA was pleased to have Dr. Letty Liu and Dr. Leila Pang with us for the announcement at the 2016 Fall Meeting.
Dr. Philip Liu was the founder and first President of the SEA and one of his visions was for SEA to help improve education in anesthesia. The awards are intended to recognize: 1) outstanding anesthesia education research, and 2) innovations in curriculum that will improve education in anesthesia.
Two “Philip Liu Awards for Innovations in Anesthesia Education” are presented annually at the SEA Spring Meeting:
- Philip Liu Award for Innovation in Anesthesia Education – Education Research
- Philip Liu Award for Innovation in Anesthesia Education – Innovation in Curriculum
The Society for Education in Anesthesia issues a call for abstracts each year for its Spring Meeting. Abstracts will be submitted for review in one of two categories: Anesthesia education research or anesthesia curriculum. Members of the SEA Research Committee will grade the abstracts and develop the grading criteria. The author(s) of the top scoring abstract in each category submitted by a member of SEA or sponsored by a SEA member will be awarded a “Philip Liu Award for Innovations in Anesthesia Education” and will be provided with:
- A $1,000 cash award
- An opportunity to present their data in an oral presentation at the SEA Spring Meeting
