President's Corner: Food for the Soul

I am writing this column shortly after returning from Boston, site of our annual one-day SEA Fall Meeting which was organized by Co-Chairs Cindy Ku and Annette Mizuguchi. The theme of the meeting was “Educators as Leaders”, and I must thank and compliment our Co-Chairs on a fantastic meeting. Congratulations! I am recharged, energized and inspired by the speakers and by reconnecting with so many of our members. Especially memorable was the annual McLeskey Lecture: “How Physician Educators Lead and Shape Healthcare Transformation” by Dr. Wiley “Chip” Souba, Professor of Surgery and Medical Education, at the Geisel School of Medicine, Dartmouth. He challenged us to help people “see” differently through a different frame or perspective. He called this vision a “framing lens”, and it’s up to us as educational leaders to help refract and polish our lenses and the lenses of those with whom we work.
Thanks to Samuel Yanofsky, Julie Nyquist, and Ira Todd Cohen’s Workshop on “Mindset, Grit and Self-Compassion”, I went out and bought two books: Carol Dweck’s “Mindset” and Angela Duckworth’s “Grit”. The workshop encouraged cultivating a “Growth” mindset versus a “Fixed” mindset. “Grit” deals with perseverance and passion for achieving long-term goals. I wish I could have attended all of the workshops. The workshop-formatted sessions are one of our Society’s greatest strengths, and they distinguish us from other larger organizations.
Other highlights of the meeting were Jeff Berger’s TED-style Talk on “Developing Individual & Departmental Leadership” and Harvard Dean Nancy Oriol’s inspiring story of her journey from obstetric anesthesiologist to institutional leadership. Portions of Dr. Oriol’s talk may be seen on her YouTube video.
The Board of Directors met prior to the Fall Meeting, and we welcomed newly elected board members Melissa Davidson and Deborah Schwengel. Carol Diachun was re-elected to a second term on the Board. I would like to thank outgoing Board members Annette Mizuguchi and Christine Park for their service to the Society, and I know that they will remain engaged in the mission and work of the organization.
The big news from your Board of Directors is the approval of a motion to align our 2019 Fall Meeting with that of the Society of Academic Associations of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine (SAAAPM). We will meet on the Thursday prior to the 2019 SAAAPM meeting. (The Fall meetings of 2018 and 2020 will be on the Friday before the ASA Annual meeting, when they have traditionally been held.) The thinking behind this new arrangement is to encourage program directors, associate program directors, and sub-specialty program directors to join the Society and attend our meetings. In addition, many of our members are also members of other sub-specialty societies and have conflicts on the Friday before the ASA Annual meeting. Our relationship with the ASA, as a “related subspecialty organization” is very important to our Board, but there is also a clear alignment with the mission of our Society and SAAAPM. Please contact me if you have thoughts or questions about this new venture.
The Board also approved the revamping of the Society website. An external vendor will help implement changes, which will include a membership directory with on-line membership renewal payment capability. Thank you to Swapna Chaudhuri and JP Lawrence of the Committee on Advancement of Technology and Education, for working with Andrew Bronson and members of the Board to select the vendor. Be on the lookout for a brand new SEA website experience!
Steve Kimatian, our Society’s Past President, has led an extensive revision of the bylaws; most changes involve formatting and clarification of terminology. The most important change defines persons eligible for membership and associate membership. The full text of the proposed changes will be circulated by email and voted on at the business meeting in the spring. Please review these carefully before then.
The Society has also renewed our contract with Svinicki Association Management, Inc. (SAMI), and Andrew Bronson will continue in his role as Executive Director of the SEA. We are also pleased to welcome Monique Gamache to our management team. She succeeds Sandy Schueller as our account manager. I would like to extend our sincere gratitude for Andrew and Sandy’s conscientious and able management of the Society’s affairs, and we look forward to working with Monique.
Attending an SEA meeting is really good for the soul, and for developing your “framing lenses”! I hope to see you all in Louisville, April 19-22, 2018, at the 33rd Spring Meeting.
