SEA/Henry Ford Health Award for Excellence and Innovation in Anesthesia Education

Established in 1996 through an initial contribution from Duke University’s Department of Anesthesia, this prestigious award recognizes individuals who have demonstrated a longstanding commitment to advancing the field of anesthesia education. In 2026, the Department of Anesthesiology, Pain Management & Perioperative Medicine at Henry Ford Health proudly assumed support of this honor. 

The award recognizes educators who embody the core mission of the SEA: to Support, Enrich, and Advance anesthesia education and those who teach. Past recipients have distinguished themselves through curriculum development, technical innovation, scholarly writing, and educational research.

Award Components:

  • Recognition: A lecture and commemorative plaque presented during the SEA Fall Meeting.
  • Honorarium: A $5,000 monetary prize.

Candidate Eligibility Criteria

  • Experience: A minimum of 10 years of documented commitment to anesthesia education.
  • Scope: Demonstrated instructional impact on medical students, residents, or faculty.
  • Credentials: Open to both physicians and non-physicians.
  • Affiliation: Active SEA membership is not required for consideration. 

Those that were nominated in the past and were not selected are encouraged to re-nominate.

Nomination Requirements

  • Letters of Recommendation: A minimum of two formal nomination letters detailing the candidate's professional impact on others within the field of anesthesia education.
  • Sponsorship: At least one nominating individual must be an active SEA member.
  • Exclusions: Current SEA Board members are restricted from submitting letters of nomination.
  • Documentation: The candidate’s current Curriculum Vitae (CV) and any relevant supporting materials.

Selection Process

  • Solicitation: The SEA Past President solicits and conducts the initial review of all applications.
  • Presentation: Qualified candidates are presented to the SEA Board of Directors.
  • Evaluation: The Board conducts a closed-ballot vote to determine the recipient.
  • Discretion: The Board reserves the right to withhold the award if candidates do not meet qualifications.

Note: Current members of the SEA Board of Directors are ineligible for nomination. Candidates must be off the Board for at least one full award or election cycle to be considered.

  • Deadline: All nomination materials must be received by July 31, 2026.
