Learning Continues between Meetings… Highlight - Fall to Spring: SEA Events and Activities

Multiple events and workshops occurred between the SEA Fall and Spring meetings. SEA members were able to engage in high quality educational activities and collaborative opportunities that focus on their career development as anesthesiologists and educators. Some of the activities hosted by SEA include:

 

1- Coach Training for Leaders and Educators in Healthcare (CTFL&E) program

The SEA (CTFL&E) typically runs between January and March each year. It includes 9 hours of training in coaching skills and 4.5 hours of coaching practice in small groups. The goal of the course is to furnish leaders and educators with essential coaching skills to enhance their leadership and teaching. The course is facilitated by experienced credentialed coaches with backgrounds in coaching physicians. This was part of the THRIVE AND ELEVATE: 4-PART COACHING SERIES FOR PROFESSIONAL GROWTH

  • Session 1: Strengthening professional identity and building connection
  • Session 2: Identifying Best Self and strengthening personal resilience
  • Session 3: Digging deeper into obstacles to change and cultivating a growth mindset
  • Session 4: Crafting a strong foundation for sustainable forward action

 

This hybrid program began with

  1. One 90-minute in-person group coaching session at the SEA Fall Meeting on November 6, 2025, in Chicago followed by:
  2. Two 90-minute online group coaching sessions in January and March 2026, and
  3. A final 90-minute in-person group coaching session at the SEA Spring Meeting, April 24-26, 2026, in St. Louis, Missouri.

2-SEA Workshop on Teaching 2026

43 anesthesiologists and educators attended the annual SEA Workshop on Teaching in Orlando- Florida between January 24th and 27th. This comprehensive workshop allowed the participants to discover foundational learning theories to enhance their teaching experience in the clinical and academic settings. Each day the participants attended hands-on sessions and exercises to develop skills and strategies to strengthen their teaching effectiveness, curriculum design and support of struggling residents.

 

 

3-Advancement of Technology in Education Committee Virtual Mini workshop

Dr. Artsiom (Arti) Zaichykau, PGY-1 anesthesiology resident at the University Hospital – Case Western Reserve University – presented: “Stay Active; Unlocking the power of Digital Flashcards for Memory Consolidation”. This workshop focused on the use and effectiveness of the digital flashcards to retain and consolidate medical knowledge. This workshop described the evidence-based literature and the techniques used to create digital flashcards for anesthesiology trainees.

 

4- Med Ed Journal Club (January and March Sessions)

Two journal club sessions were hosted by SEA.

  • The January session was presented by Dr. Benjamin Houseman and Dr. Isabel Pesola. This session discussed two articles “Enhancing Anesthesiology: A Survey of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Residency Curricula” and “Anesthesiology Resident Demographics and the BASIC Examination Pass Rates”.
  • The March session was presented by the SEA Simulation Committee members, Dr. Nada Sadek, Dr. Husien Taleb and Dr. Behnaz Hatami. This session discussed the use of virtual reality in anesthesia training. The articles presented were “Virtual Reality (VR) Training for Anesthesiologist in Invasive Procedures (VR TAIP)” and “Immersive Virtual Reality Versus Instructor-Led Training for Adult Surgical Cricothyroidotomy Training”
