CHARACTER & ETHICS

 EMPATHY/COMPASSION/ALTRUISM

o Demonstrate appropriate affect to patient & family
o Listen to patient & family and elicit concerns
o Maximize patient comfort through all means not just drugs
o Puts the patient’s safety and interests first
o Explain anesthetic risk at a level appropriate to patient & family
o Subjugates self interest to that of patient and society
o Establishes balance of personal and professional life

 HONESTY & INTEGRITY

o Admits mistakes
o Doesn’t withhold, falsify, or omit essential information
o Can say “I don’t know or I am not sure”, doesn’t bluff
o Doesn’t lie, cheat, or plagiarize
o Is ethical in dealing with patients and coworkers
o Comment only on those topics within your area of expertise
o Consults experts on topics beyond area of expertise
o Avoids conflict of interest

 RESPECT

o Acquire available patient data before meeting patient
o Introduces self & team members (acknowledging level of training) to patient & family
o Uses appropriate form of patient address
o Recognizes patient autonomy
o Facilitate patient’s informed decision making
o Uses terminology that the patient can understand
o Understands & maintains privacy & confidentiality
o Demonstrates sensitivity to cultural, gender, and religious differences
