To the SEA Committee on Simulation:
Summary of recent meeting roundtable discussions in Santa Fe:
Thanks to everyone who joined in Saturday and Sunday mornings in
Santa Fe. We had several very good discussions, and made some
concrete plans for this year. We have three main projects to
tackle. Many have already expressed their interest in
completing tasks on the projects, but if you have interest in
some aspect of any or all three, please let me know!
1.
Design and execution of a “Train the Trainers” type
workshop for Spring 2008. We have confirmed space and time
for a TWO PART workshop at the Spring 2008 SEA meeting in
Miami! Someone more creative than I, please suggest a catchy
name, ASAP!!!
·
Several people have expressed interest in being
faculty for this initial workshop (J. Hwang, V. Duvall, M.
Chernofsky, B. McIvor, S. Bodin). We’ll very shortly tackle the
objectives and plan. With a successful workshop, we’ll plan to
move on to a longer format in the future. Other interested
faculty, please let me know.
·
Our target audience at this point will be
anesthesiologists interested in joining in teaching at
established sim centers (NOT the anesthesiologist who needs to
start from scratch and build a center).
2.
Construction of an Anesthesiology Simulation reference
library, online through the SEA website. This library will
contain articles felt by submitters to be of importance to
simulation education in anesthesiology.
·
As a matter of quality control, Bill McIvor and
Meir Chernofsky have volunteered to serve as “editors” who will
screen submissions for content and quality. Submitters may also
write a summary or comments with the article.
·
I will be working with Dr. Michael Smith, the SEA
webmaster, to create this forum.
3. Scenario-Sharing Forum Creation.
Those attending the roundtable discussions at the spring meeting
agreed (I think) that the optimum way to handle sharing of
scenarios is to use the already-established, peer-reviewed, AAMC
MedEd Portal (see
http://services.aamc.org/jsp/mededportal/goLinkPage.do?link=home).
This service of the AAMC provides a place for submission
and publication of educational products, like presentations,
videos, simulation scenarios. They have an editorial staff who
review submissions, make suggestions, and eventually approve and
make the products available on their website.
·
Accepted authors/submitters have a CV-worthy
publication, aiding professional development
·
Issues of intellectual property, which are
important to many, may be helped some by officially crediting
authors. Please see the AAMC website for details – I am not
completely clear on them myself.
Sunday morning, the group discussed technical and learning
issues, and how different centers handle them. I personally
found this a helpful discussion, and hope that as we update our
electronic resources, might be able to start a discussion forum
of some sort on the website.
Please stay tuned to the website for changes as we make
progress. I am also attaching the current list of SEA members
with email addresses, to aid communication among the group. I
will be updating it in a week or two with the list from the
meeting.
